TL;DR

A bookmark-able torque reference for the BMW E36 with the M50 or M52 six-cylinder. Every value below was checked against the tightening-torque tables in the Bentley service manual. Values are in Nm, with ft-lb in brackets. Where BMW specifies torque plus angle, both are listed. Fastener sizes (M6, M8 …) are given where the value depends on them.

Important: use a calibrated torque wrench. Replace stretch (torque-to-yield) bolts every time: they are single-use by design. Engine internals (main bearing caps, connecting rods) are not in this list; get those from a full workshop manual for your exact engine before a bottom-end rebuild.

Stretch bolts: never reuse

These bolts are designed to stretch during tightening to reach a precise clamping force. Reusing them risks under-clamping or failure:

  • Cylinder head bolts
  • Crankshaft hub bolt
  • Flywheel bolts

Values are for the BMW E36 with the M50 or M52 six-cylinder, from the Bentley E36 service manual. A few figures differ for the M3 and the four-cylinder engines; where your car differs, your workshop manual wins.
